York Catholic schools hold special events to commemorate Remembrance Day

Students, staff, and community members from Catholic schools across York Region will mark Remembrance Day by paying tribute to war veterans and current members of the Canadian Forces through special events and activities, which may include school assemblies, visits from veterans, dramatic presentations, liturgies and more. Events will take place the week leading up to Remembrance Day, as well as on Friday, November 11, 2016.

Aurora

Cardinal Carter CHS to host Remembrance Day events with the Town of Aurora and Local Legion

Cardinal Carter Catholic High School, in collaboration with the Aurora Legion and the Town of Aurora will host two similar events in celebration of Remembrance Day. On Friday November 11th, students and staff will attend one of two school assemblies that will feature Mike Catania, a member of the Department of National Defence. Catania served in Afghanistan and trained as a member of the military police, he is also an alumnus of the school. The assemblies will showcase footage from the recent Town of Aurora video project entitled, “Remembrance Day – Past, Present and Future.” The video features music composed by Cardinal Carter Music Students. This music was inspired by stories told by WWII Veteran, Don Dempsey and members of the Community of First Responders dealing with PTSD. Following the assemblies, the school will hold a short prayer service at 10:50 a.m., followed by a moment of silence.

Additionally, students in the Gr. 11 IB History Course will be going to the Aurora Cenotaph to lay flowers and participate in a brief prayer service in honour of our fallen soldiers on Remembrance Day. Also, eight veterans from the Aurora Legion will visit the school to speak with Grade 11 and 12 IB History students, ahead of Remembrance Day, on Thursday, November 10th.

St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School will mark Remembrance Day with an assembly created by its arts students, who are honoured to present a variety of musical, dance and dramatic performances, as well as a visual arts installation in the school’s foyer. The school community will gather to remember those who have served and lost their lives, and those who continue to serve in the defence of liberty, human rights and democracy.

On Friday, November 11th at 10:40 am Grades 3-8 students will walk to the Aurora Cenotaph for a Remembrance Day Service. The students in the school’s choir will sing during this ceremony, which is in commemoration of the veterans. At 1 p.m. there will be a Remembrance Day assembly at the school for all students and staff, and a member of the Aurora Legion will speak.

Remembrance Day Assembly at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic College School

Students and Staff at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic College School will be honouring Remembrance Day with an assembly in the school gym on November 11th. The school is proud to announce that Major William March, Military Historian with the Canadian Armed Forces, and father of current staff member Erica March, will speak at the assembly. In addition, four students who are taking part in a school trip to Vimy Ridge in the spring, will speak about their upcoming visit and what it means to them. The Tour for Humanity mobile classroom will visit Blessed Trinity CES in Maple on November 10th and November 11th. It is a fully self-contained mobile classroom, designed to educate students in a highly interactive environment, and is operated by The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies. The Tour for Humanity mobile classroom is designed to inspire and empower students to raise their voices and take action against hate to help make the world a better place. Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Elementary School in Concord invites parents of its students to attend its Remembrance Day Liturgy. The school will reflect upon the meaning of Remembrance Day in connection to our Catholic faith, peace, love, gratitude and courage. The Grade 7 students will lead the Liturgy and perform a creative candle light reading of the famous poem, "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae. The choir will animate the Liturgy with music and the school's media team have prepared a multimedia video presentation to assist our community in exploring the importance of remembering and the application of this in our own lives.

Remembrance Day at St. David Catholic Elementary School

On Friday, November the 11, 2016 beginning at 10:50 a.m. the intermediate students at St. David Catholic Elementary School will lead the school community in a Remembrance Day Liturgy. Throughout this Liturgy the intermediate students will remind their peers about the courage, strength and sacrifices our veterans made for us. There will also be a focus on the poppy as a symbol of peace, reflections, the playing of the national anthem, as well as, the “Last Post.” A current member of the Canadian Armed Forces will also participate in the school’s Liturgy.

Remembrance Day Liturgy at Guardian Angels CES in Woodbridge

Guardian Angels Catholic Elementary School invites its parent community to attend a special Remembrance Day Service prepared by the Grade 7 students to pay tribute to the many men and women who gave their lives for their country. It will feature the intermediate students sharing prepared readings, reciting a poem, performing a song and a liturgical dance. The “Last Post” will sound prior to a moment of silence to reflect on the lives lost. Throughout the day various classes will visit the school chapel to gather in prayer and engage in a variety of activities centered around Peace. Art work will be created by the students to depict the importance of wearing a poppy and will be displayed throughout the school as a symbol of Remembrance Day.

Students to form Peace Chain at St. Emily Catholic Elementary School in Woodbridge

St. Emily CES will commemorate Remembrance Day on Friday, November 11th. The school will create a connected peace chain in the hallways as students reflect on the meaning of the day to music. The Grade 5 students will then lead the school community and deliver a prayer service over the PA system as the school honours all those men and women who have died serving our country. At 11 a.m., the school will observe a moment of silence while the school’s staff and students listen to the playing of the “Last Post.” Students will then return to their classes and participate in a series of activities designed to help them reflect on the significance of the day.

Remembrance Day Assembly at St. Andrew CES in Woodbridge

St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School will host a Remembrance Day Assembly to remember all those who sacrificed their lives to keep peace in our world, as well as those who serve in the Canadian Forces. Remembrance Day Assembly at St. Cecilia in Maple

On Friday, November 11th, at 10:45 a.m., Grade 1 - 8 students from St. Cecilia will gather for a Remembrance Day service at the school. It will be a time for the school to reflect on the meaning of the freedoms we share today and a time to show respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Through prayer, reflection, and music, the school will take time to honour soldiers who laid down their lives for Canada and for peace all over the world. Remembrance Day Liturgy at Our Lady of Peace CES

Our Lady of Peace CES in Maple will be holding a Remembrance Day Prayer Service on November 11, 2016 at 10:45 a.m. This will be followed by a presentation by Lieutenant Luk who is a member of the 48th Highlanders Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. Lt. Luk will address students, staff and visitors, then later visit each classroom to speak to students in smaller groups. The school’s parent community is invited to attend the school-wide prayer service. Our Lady of Peace CES students will also host a special civvies day in honor of Remembrance Day. Students will wear black and red, and money raised will be donated to veterans.
