St. Elizabeth Catholic High School will be holding its annual Open House for its Regional Arts Program on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at the YCDSB Theatre for the Arts, which is located adjacent to the school at 525 New Westminster Drive in Thornhill.
Any student in Grade 8 who resides in York Region and is interested in enroling in the high school arts program for September 2017 is encouraged to attend the Open House with their parents or guardians.
"St. Elizabeth's Regional Arts Program provides students with a unique opportunity to learn in a creative environment that inspires them and fosters their artistic abilities," says John Heinrich, Principal. "Our arts students enjoy learning alongside other creative students who encourage them and share their passion for art and culture. Our specialist arts teachers help students refine their talents and develop their skills through both coursework and special events and opportunities such as art exhibits, and concerts. This is truly an exceptional program. I look forward to meeting potential new students and their parents at our upcoming Open House."
Starting in September 2017, students will have the chance to specialize in Digital Media Arts, a new discipline that will focus on interactive multimedia and design for digital platforms such as web, tablet, mobile, social media, and new technologies.
"We are excited to launch our Board's first Digital Media Arts discipline," says Sandra Abate, Regional Arts Program Vice-Principal. "Employers are always looking for people with digital design skills, and this skill set will continue to be in demand as our use of technology increases. From digital art to illustration and animation, art and technology go hand-in-hand."
The traditional streams offered in the Regional Arts Program include: vocal music, instrumental music, dance, drama, and visual arts. Launched in 2003, the four-year Regional Arts Program offers students a chance to explore their artistic interests while also fulfilling the requirements to obtain their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students may also be eligible to graduate with a Ministry of Education 'Red Seal' indicating that they attained a Specialist High Skills Major in Arts and Culture.
Application packages will be given out by the school at the upcoming Open House. Auditions are required as part of the application process and details on this process will be shared at the Open House. The Open House will also provide visitors with essential program details; allow time for families to ask questions to staff and current students; and feature student performances and exhibits.
