Steps for Sofia Walk-a-Thon raises funds for student's surgery

St. Emily Catholic Elementary School held a Walk-a-Thon called, Steps for Sofia to raise funds for the surgery for one of its Grade 5 students, Sofia. Sofia is diagnosed with Dipelgia Cerebral Palsy and is receiving therapy but doctors have suggested that she would benefit from a surgery called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy), which is not offered in Canada. The surgery however is available in St. Louis, Missouri for an estimated cost of $150,000.

The SDR surgery could allow Sofia the opportunity to gain the skills she needs to live a free and independent life.

The school raised $15,059 through its Walk-a-Thon!  All funds raised through the Steps for Sophia Walk-a-Thon were given to Sofia's family to assist with the many expenses associated with the surgery, as well as the therapy required post-surgery. Sophia's parents were overwhelmed by the support they've received from the school community.
