Newmarket's Sacred Heart school raised over $186,000 for cancer research

Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Newmarket raised an astonishing $186,657 for its Relay for Life event, in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Students, staff, and alumni from the Newmarket school held the Relay for Life event on May 27th, which featured groups walking laps around the school's field for 12 hours, from 12 noon to 12 midnight. The event kicked off with greetings by School Principal, Bernie Smith; School Trustee, Theresa McNicol; Youth Program Specialist from the Canadian Cancer Society, Odane Finnegan; and Sacred Heart Student and Event Chair for the school's Relay for Life Committee, Aaron Zhang.

Following the stage presentations, Cancer Survivor's walked the first lap of the relay course, which was followed by groups and teams of students walking for the remainder of the time. There were also a variety of games, and activities that students and staff participated in throughout the day. To conclude the event, the school held a special luminary ceremony to honour the memory of loved ones who have passed away from cancer.

Since 2009, Sacred Heart CHS has raised over $550,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society and continues to hold biennial Relay For Life fundraisers in the fight against cancer. This year the school has raised $186,657, as of June 3, 2016, and this amount is expected to grow slightly higher in the next few days. This total is expected to make Sacred Heart Catholic High School, once again, the top fundraising school or post-secondary institution in Canada for this event. The school's efforts to support the fight against cancer were recognized in 2012 when it earned the title of Relay For Life's Top Fundraising High School in Canada by raising $151,030. In 2014 Sacred Heart CHS raised $143,634 and again achieved this title.

Relay For Life is an inspirational, non-competitive, 12-hour relay walk that raises funds for cancer research and community support services. Many students at the Newmarket school have been personally affected by cancer, while others participate to support others who are affected by cancer.

The York Catholic District School Board congratulates Sacred Heart CHS, especially the Relay for Life Organizing Committee and everyone who contributed to the 2016 Relay for Life, on this amazing fundraiser!
