Black History Month Recognition Ceremony

On February 25, 2015, the City of Markham, YRDSB, and MACCA (Markham Caribbean Canadian Association) held a special Black History Month Recognition Ceremony at the Markham Civic Centre.

At the event, YCDSB Associate Director, John Sabo brought greetings on behalf on the Board, and the Voices of McGivney performed the song, "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child."  The Voices of McGivney is the choir club at Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy and features 42 students. Other school groups also performed at the event including Parkview Public School, Markham District High School, and Toronto's Africentric Alternative School.

The York Catholic District School Board congratulates Jhamari Hussey, Grade 11 student from St. Augustine CHS who received an award at the event for a book of facts that he compiled featuring biographies and information on Black trailblazers and inventors. He also sold framed pictures depicting empowering quotes and messages from Black role models.
