Associate Director of Corporate Services and Treasurer of the Board to Retire after 32 years

John Sabo, Associate Director of Corporate Services and Treasurer of the Board, York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) has announced his retirement after 32 years with the Board, effective April 29, 2016.

John began his career at York Catholic as the Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance, and one year later, he became the Divisional Superintendent of Business Affairs, a position he held until 1993. John was appointed Associate Director and Treasurer in 1993.

Since starting with York Catholic in 1984, John has led the Board through significant growth. Below is a snapshot by numbers:

Facilities: 40 schools

2016

Budget: $650 million
Enrolment: 56,000 pupils
Staff: 8,000
Facilities: 105 schools (*8 million sq.ft totaling $1.0 Billion in value)

John has always focused on collaborating "beyond York Catholic" by playing key leadership roles with several public sector organizations:

  • Director on the OMERS Administration Corporation Board for 13 years
  • Board Director on the Southlake Regional Health Centre Hospital Board
  • Director on the Board of Directors of OECM (Ontario Education Collaborative Marketplace)
  • Founding member of both the Ontario School Boards' Financing Corporation and the Catholic School Boards' Services Association
  • Founding member and first chair of the Council of Senior Business Officials of Ontario
  • Active involvement in various provincial school board business and finance committees and task forces

John's retirement will see him assuming a new role as President and CEO with OECM on May 2, 2016. [insert link to oecm.ca/news]
