The York Catholic District School Board congratulates Margaret Orsi, Teacher at St. Brother Andre CHS in Markham on her recent receipt of the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award. Ms. Orsi was one of only 28 people who received the prestigious award from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Her Honour the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, on November 10th at a ceremony held at Queen's Park.
The Governor General's Caring Canadian Award recognizes Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. Often working behind the scenes, these individuals volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow citizens. The award also brings to light the example set by volunteers, whose compassion and engagement are a part of our Canadian character.
Ms. Orsi was recognized for her work with Ayni, an organization she founded in 2001. Ayni is a grassroots non-governmental organization that helps alleviate poverty in Piura, Peru. Her work has inspired countless York Catholic students to develop a passion for social justice, and led to the creation of the York Catholic District School Board's Indigenous Studies Program, which has brought students to Peru and which has influenced a new generation of humanitarians.
