Father Peter Turrone blesses new statue of St. Emily

On Tuesday, September 22, 2015, staff and students at St. Emily Catholic Elementary School celebrated its first Mass of the new school year with members of its school community. Father Peter Turrone of St. Clare of Assisi Church officiated the Mass, where he also blessed the school’s new statue of its patron saint, St. Emily De Rodat.

The statue of St. Emily is on display in the school’s foyer to greet everyone who enters the school.

Catholic School Council Co-Chairs, Carla Zanutel and Poly Kartakis-Tarantino joined Father Peter and Principal Lucy Rizzi for a photo with the new statue.

About St. Emily De Rodat

St. Emily was born in 1787 at Rodez, France. She was educated and became a teacher at the age of 18. She realized that many children from poor families were not going to school because they could not afford to do so, so instead she opened a school for them. Emily devoted all of her life to teaching the poor and gathered other young women to help her cope with the rapidly growing number of children in her school. St. Emily died on September 19, 1852 and was canonized in 1950 by Pope Pius XII.
