At the first Board meeting of the 2015-16 school year, Elizabeth Crowe, Chair of the Board of Trustees, welcomed the new Student Trustee, Nicolas Bottger, Grade 11 student at Father Bressani Catholic High School in Woodbridge. Nicolas is York Catholic’s 17th Student Trustee and will serve a two-year term; first as the Junior Trustee, then next year as the Senior Trustee.
At the Board meeting, Chair Elizabeth Crowe, along with Vice-Chair Marlene Mogado, invited Nicolas to participate in an official swearing in ceremony where he took an oath to serve York Catholic students. Attendants at the Board meeting also participated in a special blessing for Nicolas.
The York Catholic District School Board has two student trustees, who represent all York Catholic students at the Board level. They attend Board meetings and share many of the same rights and responsibilities as the school trustees voted in by the public every four years.
Student trustees may suggest motions at Board meetings, and bring student concerns and opinions to the attention of Board members and school Board staff. They also have the chance to network with student trustees from across the province. Every year, one new student trustee is elected, and they hold the position for two years.
“Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve wanted to make a difference,” said Nicolas. “Education expands people’s horizons like nothing else ever does. Since I was 7 I have wanted to become a politician, influencing the world as we know it, improving it, however possible. It all starts with a better education. If you have a great idea about how to make our schools better, or if you need help navigating our school system, let me know. Working together we can truly make a difference!”
