Recent graduates, Shikha Patel and Amy Li, both from Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham, are this year’s top students in the York Catholic District School Board. Shikha earned a perfect 100 per cent in seven of her Grade 12 classes, and Amy earned a perfect 100 per cent in six of her Grade 12 classes.

Both Shikha and Amy were enrolled in Father Michael McGivney’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program, which is considered more challenging and intensive than the regular curriculum. The pair was in the same Biology and Chemistry classes and would sometimes study together.

The girls participated in several extracurricular activities at their school. Both were members of the Arts Club, Eco Schools Team, French Cinema Club, and Badminton Team. Amy was also a member of the Female Empowerment Club and Best Buddies Club during her Grade 12 year, and a member of the school’s band and choir during her Grade 9 and 10 years. Shikha also played intramural ball hockey and volleyball, and continues to volunteer after school at a care home facility for seniors with dementia.

Shikha will begin the Health Sciences program at McMaster University in September. She said that as a student it is important that she focuses on the course material because it will help her reach her career goals. In the future, she would like a career that would allow her to bring medical resources and supports to people living in rural communities who may not have access to adequate health care.

Amy will start the Medical Sciences program at Western University in September. She would like a career in pediatrics because she likes children and wants to help others. She said that working with other people motivates her, and that she always strives to try her best at school because otherwise she would always wonder if she could have done better.

The York Catholic District School Board congratulates Shikha and Amy on their remarkable achievements and wishes them the best of luck as they continue their academic careers. The Board also recognizes the hard work and dedication of the entire 2014-15 graduating class, and thanks them for their wonderful contributions to its school system.
