On June 18th, St. John XXIII Catholic Elementary School in Unionville held many exciting events to mark the upcoming 2015 Pan Am Games.
Students participated in a wide variety of outdoor activities and Pan Am Athletes from the national wrestling team took time from their busy training schedule to share their experiences with the St. John XXIII school community. The athletes included Braxton Papadopoulos, the youngest member of the senior women's team; Justina Distasio, the 2015 Senior Pan Am Championship Gold Medalist and a four-time All American and three-time USA Women's College Champion; Brianne Barry, a four- time All Canadian; and Leah Ferguson, a Pan American Champion, 2012 Olympic competitor and a veteran of the National Team.
Each athlete eloquently shared her personal story of commitment and hard work and described the challenges and benefits associated with training and competing in high-level sports, such as the Pan Am Games and the Olympics. The presentations were inspirational and underscored the importance of hope, perseverance and following one’s dreams.
Thank you to Joan Stang-Kim, Grade 3 Teacher, who was instrumental in coordinating the day’s events.
