This spring, students and teachers from across the York Catholic District School Board participated in the 6th Annual Love of Dance Showcase.
Approximately 600 students from 24 junior and intermediate school dance teams gathered at the YCDSB Theatre for the Arts to celebrate their ‘love of dance,’ in a non-competitive setting.
The goal of the showcase was to:
Teams performed a choreographed piece based on one of the Catholic virtues: hope, perseverance, reverence, courage, compassion, justice, unity, wisdom, responsibility, or honesty.
Feedback was provided by two expert adjudicators, Shereese Halley-Casperz of St. Michael Catholic Academy and Lolita Leva of St. Mary of the Angels.
“This yearly showcase gives students the opportunity to explore their dance passion and talents,” said Leva. “Along with guidance and instruction from dance coaches, students are able to demonstrate their unique and individualized dance interpretations of the dance curriculum. We look forward to this event as much as the students do! It's great to see such large dance groups and so many schools participating.”
Recognition was given to teams that best showcased the elements of space, energy, and relationships. Each day of the showcase, a junior and an intermediate team who represented their school well and also gave the performance that best reflected their chosen virtue through dance were given the Virtue Award.
“All schools came in with such positive energy and sportsmanship,” said Lisa Lauriault, Arts Consultant and emcee for the event. “It was important to recognize not only the virtue displayed during the dance performance, but how the teams represented their school throughout the whole day.”
A new segment to the showcase was introduced this year, in which two students from each team were invited to the stage to improvise to a piece of music heard for the very first time that day.
