Late last year, the York Catholic District School Board's annual Leadership Links conference was held at Jean Vanier Catholic High School in Richmond Hill. Students from over 30 elementary schools attended the leadership development conference. Director of Education, Patricia Preston brought addressed the student audience at the conference, highlighting the theme of the conference, "Carpe Diem," which means, "Seize the Day!"
Students were taught the importance of being a positive leader; someone who seizes every moment with compassion, determination, and has faith and the willpower to change tomorrow. Guest speaker, Stu Saunders, encouraged the students and staff advisors in attendance to appreciate the intangible things in life, such as compassion from a friend, encouragement from a teacher, and unconditional love from a family member. His presentation helped students recognized the need to embrace each day as a day for which we are blessed. In the words of Mother Teresa, "Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin."
